How To: Create A Memorable Beach Themed Wedding

You may think that simply hosting your wedding ocean-side is enough to create a beach wedding that people will remember. While your guests are bound to love celebrating your special day with you regardless, some extra attention to details will make it the beach wedding people can not stop talking about! The most memorable weddings have a strong, central vision that guides the direction and impact of the entire event. The best way to accomplish this is to first consider how the wedding should reflect your personal style, and then to incorporate beach-themed decor in a manner that is cohesive and strategically placed.

1. Determine how your wedding will reflect your personality & style

Before you dive in and focus on the seaside theme completely, take a minute to get clear on your own personal style. Once you’ve determined what your own personal style is, you can use this to set the tone for your wedding decor. This may seem like an arbitrary step, but remember, this is the key to unlocking a uniquely styled wedding and avoiding that cookie-cutter feel.

2. Choose your colors

Choosing a specific set of colors for your wedding is not just a ritual – it actually goes a long way to creating a coherent look and feel to your entire event. You may choose to have a mostly neutral backdrop with flashes of color. This is something that works especially well at the beach with the neutral tone of sand. For instance, you might choose a neutral container such as a tin planter for flowers, but opt for colorful flowers and bright napkins. Remember that no detail is too small. Common color choices for beach themed weddings are blue with silver or gold, and a pale peach accent.

3. Start with your lighting

Once you’ve decided on your overall tone and color choices, begin with the lighting. Opt for fun options such as candle-filled lanterns, paper lanterns, excessive amounts of votive candles or round-bulb light strings.

4. Decide on flowers and where they will be placed

Once you have your lighting figured out, you can decide on your floral arrangements. Remember to keep the two in balance. You do not want to feel like the flowers are competing with the lighting, or vice versa. And remember, the vases you use are decorations too. White porcelain vases or square glass vases are ideal options for a beach wedding.

5. Add in decorative knick-knacks

This may seem like an afterthought, but do not let its concluding placement fool you. These seemingly extra decorative pieces are the things that will truly lend depth and character to your event space. This is your opportunity to get creative and surprise people with delightful little touches.

Layer on The Color: Tips for Selecting Your Wedding Color Scheme

selecting a color palette

Beyond deciding on a specific wedding theme, finalizing a color palette for your wedding day can be one of the biggest  planning challenges. With tons of options, all equally lovely, the selection process can be daunting. The good news is there is somewhat of a science to it. After all, your choice colors must be put into context. Here are some of the key considerations you’ll want to make when narrowing down your options.

Your Wedding Theme

Before tackling colors, think big picture by selecting your overall wedding theme. A given theme will naturally lend itself to specific color palettes. During your theme inspiration search you’re bound to gravitate to certain design details, as well as color specifics. Pay close attention to those things that reoccur and make note of them to help narrow down the search.

Your Couple Style

Make it easier on yourself and go with what you know. Evaluate your couple style, reviewing your day to day looks, your home decor picks, and the palettes you instinctively gravitate towards. Those shades that pop up most often in both of your styles should be put to the top of your color prospect list.

Your Wedding Venue

A final color palette selection cannot be made in isolation of the place that it’s going to be executed in. Whether you’ve selected your space or are still searching, assess the spot against the theme and color scheme you have in mind. Make sure that what you’re considering can play itself out within the space you’ve selecting or are evaluating as a potential location.

Your Wedding Date

Consider the time of year you’re tying the knot. Every season comes with a set of common, natural, color palettes. Go through the exercise of asking yourself what colors you tend to gravitate towards during a given season, and while searching for wedding inspiration look into weddings taking place during the same time of year as yours. Although it’s not a cardinal rule that you have to stick to soft and romantic pastels in the summer and bold dramatic shades in the fall, natural selections will definitely help to narrow down the options.

Pulling it All Together

Once you’ve used all the previously mentioned guiding points, you should come away with a series of color options. The next and final step will be to create your personal color guide formed around the concepts of focal, accents, metallic and neutral shades. Focal shades will make up the majority of your color selection, dominating throughout your wedding day details. Neutrals will provide for a quiet background, helping blend your various shades. While accents and metallics will work to compliment the overall look. The key and final rule, all shades should coordinate.

But enough talk! Here are some visual examples to help further guide you along your color selection journey.
