DIY: To the Moon Paper Lanterns

1tothemoonparty_hero

Take your guests to the moon and back with party décor that is truly out of this world. Be inspired by this first birthday party for a sweet little astronaut and create your own galaxy of planets using white paper lanterns, tissue paper and paint.

But first, here’s a few details from the party:

How to make a polka dot moon

6

The Supplies

Step by Step

Step  1.  Cut circles from tissue paper using a large paper punch.

DIY Tip for punching tissue – fold tissue so you can punch 4 circles at once. We also recommend sandwiching the tissue paper between two pieces of scrap paper to keep the tissue paper from tearing as you punch.

Step  2.  Attach the tissue paper dots to the lantern using a foam brush and white glue.

Step 3.  Once the glue is competely dry apply a thin layer of glue directly over top of all the tissue paper dots to seal them to the lantern.

Supplies

  • White paper lanterns
  • watercolour paints in a range of colours from light to navy blue and black
  • white craft paint
  • large to medium paint brushes for the watercolour paint
  • small paint brush for the craft paint.

Step by Step

Step 1. Using the lightest blue watercolour paint and a large paint brush, paint a few cloud shapes directly on the paper lantern.

DIY Tip – We suggest painting from lightest to darkest colours for the best results.

Step 2. While the paint is still wet add more cloud like shapes with the next second lightest blue right beside the first cloud shapes. You want to overlap the colours slightly so there are no white spaces between colours.

Step 3. Continue adding colours to the lantern in this manner, going darker and darker in colour, until there are no white areas left. You can go over some of the lighter areas of the lantern at the end to make it darker if you find the colours too light or washed out.

Step 4. Allow the watercolour paint to dry completely before going onto this step. Using the small paint brush and white white acrylic paint add clusters of white dots all over the lantern to represent tiny stars.

DIY Tip –  Vary the sizes of the white dots and use the lantern close up for guidance.

How To: Decorate for Less by Skipping the Flowers

Your wedding day budget is depleting and you are looking for ways to save costs. One way couples have found to reduce wedding costs is by replacing flowers with simple décor items. Many couples are straying away from using flowers and are instead choosing to make their own decorations and bouquets out of other unique items. Flowers aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, so if you are a bride who doesn’t want flowers at their wedding we’ve got some alternatives that you and your guests will love.

Aisle Decorations

Decorative Lanterns are a great choice to brighten up your aisle. They can be painted to match your wedding colours or dressed up using a decorative ribbon and you’ve got the perfect addition to guide you down the aisle.

Candles are another great way to decorate your aisle. They provide a romantic lit atmosphere perfect for that cozy indoor affair. However, if your venue does not allow open flames, flameless candles are also available.

Flowerless Centerpiece Options

Add a vintage look to your reception with these Candle Holders. You can decorate them to add your own flair. Add some candles and you’ve got a simple alternative to flowers.

Mini Mason Jar With Lid

Having a summer wedding and want some pops of color on the guest tables? With beautiful decorated mason jars you’ve got a fun and easy DIY project that the whole wedding party can help out with.

Other summer weddings choose to use fruits to decorate with, filling tall glass vases or jars with different colored fruits for the right amount of color.

The Bridal Bouquet

A bride’s bouquet can be made up of all kinds of different things but one of the most popular for today’s bride is a brooch bouquet. These are easy to make, even if you aren’t very crafty and they look fantastic in photos. Brides usually ask for brooches to be donated by friends or family members, but can also find them in antique stores for relatively cheap. This bouquet is not to be thrown though; it is meant as a keepsake for the bride and there is usually a small substitution bouquet that is used if the bride chooses to do a bouquet toss.

Other bouquets may include flowers that are made out of sheet music, comic books or origami paper. Rustic themed weddings have seen flowers formed from burlap and ribbon, and others include fabric flowers made by the bride or purchased from a crafter.

Whether you decide to go with flowers or not, the choice is yours for your wedding. However, if you are feeling adventurous, skip the flowers and let your flowerless décor be the talk for years to come.

DIY Wedding Wednesday: Give Thanks – The Friendship Shadow Box

diy friendship shadow box

Having just come off Canadian Thanksgiving Day celebrations, and with our friends to the south of us getting set to celebrate their respective day in just a few weeks, naturally we’ve got being thankful at the forefront of our minds. For daily pleasures, our houses and homes, and most of all for our family and friends. In the spirit of giving, today we’re featuring one of favorite ways to honor those people and events we cherish most, by displaying mementos of memories we hold dear in our hearts, perfectly displayed in chic shadow boxes no less. Here’s the how-to.

The Supplies

diy friendship shadow box - step 2

Step 2: hot glue the custom paper backer to the inside of the frame backing. Keep glue to a minimum and concentrate it at the corners / sides to avoid an uneven and bulky finish.

Step 3: layout the ideal placement of all your personal mementos. When ready, secure all in place with hot glue. When dry, fit your custom backer into the shadow box frame.
