DIY Wedding Wednesday: Well Lit – The Illuminated Table Runner

how to - the illuminated table runner

It’s no secret that I’m slightly obsessed with table runners. Whether they be made up of candles, florals, foliage, or all of the above, I can’t get enough of them. And there’s one very good reason. They are stunning! Gracing the center of a tabletop, they provide a visual focal point that binds the reception event design together. The creative opportunities for execution are endless, and you can’t go wrong with any single approach. And just when I thought they couldn’t get any prettier, we decided to try adding some string lights into the equation. The result, instant gorgeousness. Here’s how to make the look yours.

The Step by Step and The Supplies

table runner how to

Step 1: Select an abundant green (or two) to act as the base of your runner. We used two varieties of eucalyptus, seeded and moon lagoon. Going with more than one variety of greenery provides for added texture and interest. And remember, the fuller your selected green(s), the less stems you’ll need to complete the look. We used two bunches of the seeded eucalyptus, and one of the moon lagoon.

Step 2: Starting at one end of your table, lay a wide and full gathering of your main foliage. This will be your widest point.

Step 3: Working toward the middle point of the table, start tapering in your gathering. You don’t want it to be too narrow but a slightly tapered approach creates an interesting effect and saves on the amount of stems you need.

Step 4: If using two varieties of greenery, add in select stems of the second kind for added texture, reserving some to later cover exposed wiring from your string lights (which will be added when the runner of greens is complete).

Step 5: Repeat steps 1-4 on the other side of the table, meeting the two arrangements at the middle point.

Step 6: Take your selected string lights, we went with white paper and white lace lanterns (one strand of each), and intertwine them into your greenery. Use the stems to cover as much of the wiring as possible, incorporating additional stems if necessary.

DIY Wedding Wednesday: Gorgeous Greens – 3 Ways to Use Boxwood at Your Wedding

wedding how-to - three ways to use boxwood

Although I’m not a fan of cliches, there’s no doubt that many of them ring true. And there’s one particular famous statement, namely “less is more”, that I find myself gravitating towards time and again, especially when contemplating certain creative design concepts. Think carefully placed, simple details that go miles in their aesthetic appeal and impact. Subtle accents that elevate a look rather than overpower. Statement pieces that stand on their own. And that’s exactly what today’s feature, boxwood, is and does for whatever it’s applied to. Simply put, it’s one of nature’s most beautiful props. Bursting with vibrant color and no stranger to lush texture, it’s like a little bit of decorative magic. Here’s just a few ways how to incorporate the gorgeous green into your day.

The Supplies

For Look #1 –  The Centerpiece:

For Look #2 – The Votive Wreath

For Look #3 – Trimmed Favor Box

The Looks and The How-To’s

Look #1 – Skip the Stems

Of the flowering variety that is. Stick to a lush foliage like boxwood to create bountiful centerpieces that don’t break the bank. Up the impact by carefully selecting creative centerpiece vessels, like this twine detailed galvanized bucket.

To get this look, fill your bucket with a generous amount of boxwood stems, such that they overflow out from every angle. Add an additional touch of interest and rustic charm by detailing your bucket with craft paper twine.

#2 – Put a Ring on It

If having a Rustic, Woodland, or green-chic wedding of any kind, wreaths are basically ‘a must’. The decorative detail brings an added sense of the organic to your design with very little effort, just as it should be. Consider incorporating the pretty little accents to simple votive holders to elevate their impact within your overall centerpiece concept.

To get this look, wrap a stem of boxwood around the votive holder and secure in the back with green floral wire. If your stem is not full or long enough simply combine multiple stems with the wire.

#3 – Finishing Touch

A box is just a box, until you put your touch to it. Infuse creativity into every last detail of your event, including your guest takeaway, by finishing off the last thing they see with a touch of boxwood beauty.

To get this look wrap your favor box with a few strands of paper twine.  Stuff boxwood in under the tied twine and add your tag.
