Wanna know the secret behind a magazine worthy wedding set up? What it takes to make your wedding breathtakingly swoon worthy? What will have your guests talking about your wedding for days and days? It’s all about going the extra mile to take your decorative details to unexpected levels of pretty. A table overhang that perfectly frames a table or setup in a wonderfully whimsical way is a guaranteed way to achieve that magazine wow factor every single time. I may be biased though since I’ve got just a bit of a personal obsession with them. So here are a few examples to plead my case. You be the judge!

Tips to Creating Your Own Overhang:

  • First and foremost, make sure your venue will allow an overhang. If so, check to see that they have rigging in place to facilitate one, i.e. exposed beams or pipes.
  • Whenever possible, work with a professional to create your custom overhang. The logistics behind pulling one together are complicated. A professional can also bring in rigging if your venue doesn’t have any.
  • If having an outdoor wedding tap into what Mother Nature has to offer and use low hanging branches on large trees.
  • For best visual results hang your overhang components at different heights and depths to give dimension to your arrangement.
  • Remember that what goes up must come down. If managing an overhang on your own, before committing to it, keep in mind that you’ll have to go back to the venue for tear down the next day.

Wedding Inspiration: Bridal Bouquets

gardenia bridal bouquet

gorgeous gardenia
feature stems: white gardenias, sea holly, cascade of plumosa fern and pearls

Hydrangeas. Garden Roses. Dusty Miller. Calla Lilies. Orchids. Just to name a few. What do all these have in common? They’re all sensational stems that make for breathtaking bridal bouquets. And although bouquets are best left in the hands of a floral pro (with the exception of a couple faux wonders we’ll share with you today), you’ll certainly want to play a role in the creation of yours. To help you decide what’s best suited for you, we’re sharing some of our favorite bundled beauties from our very own past creative shoots, complete with a few tips on what else you’ll want to consider in your selection beyond just the visual.

pink hydrangea bridal bouquet

pink perfection
feature stems: pink hydrangea, pink garden roses and dusty miller

Tip #1: Before deciding on your bridal bouquet you’ll first want to map out your overall wedding day design, including the color palette. Your bouquet should work with the big picture but have a twist to it that’s unique to you, i.e. incorporate a floral variety that compliments the rest of your arrangements but doesn’t show up anywhere else.

orchid bridal bouquet

opulent orchids
feature stems: red mokara orchids

Tip #2: Take into consideration both the style of your gown as well as your body shape. Your bouquet should work proportionally with both. A professional florist will be able to offer up guidance on the arrangement type that will work best for you.

calla lily bridal bouquet

sophisticated callas
feature stems: calla lilies wrapped in lily grass

Tip #3: If on a budget make sure to select floral varieties that are in season during the month you’re getting married, i.e. Tulips in April and Peonies in June. Also consider going with large bloom varieties to minimize the number of stems without cutting into overall impact.

garden rose bridal bouquet

rustic garden
feature stems: white o’hara garden roses, silver brunia, white scabiosa, blushing bride protea, chocolate cosmos, stephanotis, succulents and dusty miller

Tip #4: Remember to factor in the weather, especially if having an outdoor wedding. Select floral varieties and arrangements that can stand the heat, can be out of water for an extended period of time, and those that’ll keep in strong winds. Whenever possible, have your stems water picked.

peony bridal bouquet

pretty peonies
feature stems: white peonies

Tip #5: If you have a sensitivity to strong smells, let your florist know. Some floral varieties, like gardenias and freesias, give off strong fragrances that although lovely can irritate those susceptible to select scents.

hydrangea bridal bouquet

a punch of color
feature stems: purple and blue hydrangea

Tip #6: If planning to do a traditional bouquet toss at your reception ask your florist to create a throw away bouquet. These are small, fit to theme, inexpensive bundles that allow you to hold onto your bouquet for as long as possible.

fabric flower bridal bouquet

fabulous fabric
feature stems: ruffled fabric flowers

Tip #7: If for whatever reason you don’t want to use real flowers, or if you want to turn your bouquet into a wedding day keepsake, don’t be afraid to go faux. With gorgeous options like the DIY beauty above and the stunning couture style brooch bouquet below, you won’t be cutting any corners as far as impact goes.

DIY Wedding Decor: Beautiful Butterflies

whimsical garden wedding tablescape

I’m a lucky girl. My profession has me constantly immersed in beautiful things. Whether it’s helping a bride design her wedding or pulling together an editorial shoot, I’m always involved in creating pretty little details. I love all the creative challenges that come with my line of work. They keep me on my toes! But I get very excited when I come across a design detail that provides major visual impact while being easy to execute. Today’s DIY post is a perfect example of just that.

Following this past Monday’s Garden Whimsy Bridal Style Post, where butterflies made up one of the key design elements, today I’m showing you how to get the look through the simple incorporation of beautiful butterfly clusters. In Monday’s post you saw them featured as a head table overhang but they can be applied anywhere and on any scale. Because unfortunately our studio space is not set in the midst of a lovely summer garden, we’ve enlisted the help of one of our fave garden props, which just happens to be a perfect wedding prop too. Enjoy!

The Supplies

All you need are the butterflies. No tools required! The set I used was originally created for cake decorating purposes but the versatile design, complete with wire attachments, makes them usable for just about any decorative concept. Whether it be a ceremony backdrop, a head table overhang or a guest table centerpiece, these hand painted feather butterflies are sure to add a touch of pretty anywhere.

The Process

Step 1: Pick Your Point of Application

The two wire attachment points on these butterflies allow them to easily be inserted into or wrapped around any number of things.  I selected a wire mannequin which could be used as a creative decorative accent adjacent to a favor or greeting table, or as a prop for your wedding photos.

If your desired point of application does not offer up points of attachment, like a glass vase for example, simply remove the wires (which come out easily without damaging the product) and use Glue Dots to secure your butterflies.

Step 2: Get Yourself Organized

If you’re unsure of where to start and how to achieve the right final look, organize your butterflies before starting the application process. Separate them by size and color and then pre-form the clusters that will give you the end result you’re going for. And if getting creative comes easily to you, just skip this step and free form the application of your butterflies.

(Pro Tip: The best end result is one that looks effortless and natural.)

Step 3: Start Applying!

Pick your start and end points. To achieve that effortless look remember to mix up the colors and sizes, and the direction in which your butterflies are pointing.

butterfly diy wedding decor - step one

Fill in your mid point. Make sure it keeps visual balance with your start and end points by using a similar mix of colors and sizes.

butterfly diy wedding decor - step two

Work around your three reference points, building on the fullness of your overall cluster. Avoid overlapping your butterflies in such a way that their wings get flattened. You want them to look like they have just landed.Work to create a full final look but leave a little breathing room to avoid a messy end result.
