DIY Wedding Wednesday: Mini Bottle Vase Overhang

mini bottle vase overhang

Picture this. It’s your wedding day, the day you’ve been waiting for your whole life, and everything is absolutely perfect. You’ve got your guy (or girl) by your side, your dress is a stunner, the music is playing, the champagne is flowing, and above your head table a whimsical floral-filled aerial display marks your spot center stage. Do you love it? Then make it yours with today’s DIY mini bottle vase feature! Here’s how to get the look.

The Supplies

mini bottle vase overhang - supplies

  • two wooden poles (length dependent on how large you’d like your overhang. Our poles were each 40″ long.)
  • mini clear glass bottles (number dependent on the length of the overhang, Our overhang took 11 bottles.)
  • fabric ribbon
  • clear string (illusion cord or fishing line) and floral tape
  • a variety of dainty blooms and ivy

The Step by Step

mini bottle vase overhang - step 1

Step 1: wrap your poles with fabric ribbon, securing them at the ends with either glue or bridal pins. Once complete attach them to a couple of rigging points with fishing line, about  inches 20″ apart, with the back hanging slightly higher than the front. We used 2 standard ceiling hooks for each pole for our rigging points.

Tip: Before committing to this concept make sure you can execute it at your wedding venue. Ask if existing rigging within the ceiling exists.

Step 2: add a base of ivy to your poles, securing it with floral tape. At this stage you aren’t looking to cover the poles completely, only to give yourself a starting point, while leaving room to work in the hanging of the mini bottles.

mini bottle vase overhang - step 3

Step 3: start hanging the bottle vases, attaching them to your poles with fishing line. Begin by creating a starting point for yourself, hanging a few in front and a few in back, all at various heights.

mini bottle vase overhang - step 3b

Step 4: continue hanging the bottles, filling in the spaces between and around those you used as your starting points, all the while keeping with a mix of heights. To avoid a messy look, as you go be mindful to avoid overlapping the front and back bottles. Continue until you’ve reached your desired density.

Step 5: complete the look by adding flowers and water to the vases, and by filling in your ivy. When working in the additional pieces of ivy, strategically intertwine the vines to cover up as many of the points at which you taped as possible.

DIY Wedding Wednesday: Winter Floral Arrangements

diy winter floral arrangements

What do dusty purples, frosted blues and silver tinted greens have in common? They all happen to make beautiful color options for a gorgeous winter wedding palette. Mix with classic snow white and you’ve got yourself a stunning color combo. Taking the in season stems we shared with you in this past Monday’s Winter Floral Guide, featured in these exact shades, today we’re creating a few warm hued arrangements to show you some of the pretty possibilities. From a simple and sophisticated boutonniere, to a loose and lovely bouquet, to an overflowing and abundant centerpiece, here’s what some of winter’s best come together to create. {note: for best results, we always recommend working with a professional florist whenever possible.}

Look #1: The Simple and Sophisticated Boutonniere – Supplies

winter wedding boutonniere supplies

  • flowers / foliage: dusty purple spray rose, dusty miller and seeded eucalyptus
  • floral wire, floral tape and bridal pin
  • craft paper twine
  • floral sheers

The Step by Step

diy winter boutonniere - step 1

Step 1: select your stems, you’ll need one of each, cut down to size to approximately 2 – 2.5 inches depending on the stem, and trim off excess leaves. For best textural results, make sure your seeded eucalyptus has both a leaf and seeds.

diy winter boutonniere - steps 2-4

Step 2: layer your stems starting with the dusty miller, then the seeded eucalyptus and finally the rose. Trim ends to even out the stems. Wrap the bundle with floral wire, starting at the base of the dusty miller’s leaf and ending just above the end of your bundle. Once complete the stems should stay securely bundled.

Step 3: wrap the floral wire with floral tape for an even finish.

Step 4: finish off by covering the floral tape with craft paper twine and pin in the back to secure.

The End Result

Look #2: The Loose and Lovely Bouquet

winter wedding bridal bouquet supplies

  • flowers / foliage: dusty purple spray roses (approximately 5 stems), anemone (approximately 3-4 stems) and seeded eucalyptus (approximately 3-4 stems)
  • floral wire, floral tape and a couple bridal pins
  • craft paper twine
  • floral sheers

The Step by Step

diy winter bridal bouquet - step 1

Step 1: select your stems, trim off excess leaves and cut down to size. The length of your bouquet should be proportionate to your body, such that you can hold it comfortably, with just a bit of excess stems showing.

diy winter bridal bouquet - steps 2 & 3

Step 2: begin bundling your bouquet by mixing your anemones and spray roses. Work to create a balanced mix of stems, breaking up your roses with the anemones.

Step 3: add in a scattering of the seeded eucalyptus stems to the outer perimeter of your bouquet. Use the eucalyptus to prop up any anemones not already held up by the roses as the anemones are the weakest stems of the bunch.

diy winter bridal bouquet - steps 4 to 6

Step 4: wrap your bouquet with floral wire. Start at the top of bundle, such that the stems are secured in place and wrap about 3 inches down.

Step 5: wrap the floral wire with floral tape for an even finish.

Step 6: finish off the wrap by covering the floral tape with craft paper twine and secure at the back of the bouquet with a couple pins. Complete the bouquet by trimming and evening out your stem’s ends.

The End Result

Look #3: The Overflowing and Abundant Centerpiece – Supplies

winter wedding centerpice supplies

  • flowers / foliage: dusty purple spray roses, white lisianthus, dusty miller, silver dollar eucalyptus and seeded eucalyptus. Exact number of stems depends on your centerpiece vase / vessel. Our arrangement took 25 stems of spray roses, 10 stems of lisianthus and small bunches of both types of eucalyptus and dusty miller.
  • floral foam and sheers
  • centerpiece vessel. We recommend a low option that allows stems to flow over.

The Step by Step

diy winter wedding centerpiece - step 1

Step 1: trim your stems of excess leaves and cut them down to the required length, based on the vase / vessel you’re using. You’ll want them such that they stick out and flow over the top of the vessel.

diy winter wedding centerpiece - steps 2 to 4

Step 2: begin building your arrangement at either end. Start with a full stem of seeded eucalyptus and a couple stems of roses for each side.

Step 3: continue the same combination along the back side of the arrangement, but also include silver dollar eucalyptus. Work the formation so that the stems spill out over the rim of your vessel.

Step 4: repeat step 3 on the front of your arrangement, then fill in the formation with the lisianthus and dusty miller to complete.
