DIY Wedding Wednesday: Tabletop Details – Burlap Napkin Wraps

diy burlap napkin wraps

There’s a very simple formula to getting gorgeous wedding table settings. Textures + Layers + Florals = Guaranteed Pretty. It’s all about the details and the more of them you pull together, the more jaw-dropping the big picture becomes. Today we’re putting the principle to practice with one core DIY supply, burlap wrap by the roll, pairing it with a range of textured elements to create napkin accents sure to take any table from simple to stunning. And just in case napkin wraps or rings don’t suit your fancy, just slip these lovelies onto a vase or a pillar candle to just as easily incorporate the details into your day.

Step 1: punch out several craft paper leaves, a few in each of your three shades. Set aside.

Step 2 (not shown): measure out the required length for your wrap, considering the width you require for a completed wrap when folded over on itself, and cut.

Step 3: fold your wrap over in half such that the top becomes rounded while the bottom remains frayed.

Step 4: fold over the ends, creating the required wrap width for your napkin fold (our completed wrap was approximately 5 inches wide) and glue to secure.

Step 5: glue on a scattering of leaf cutouts to the front of your wrap. Cluster a grouping at the top left and scatter the rest to the right.

Wedding Theme Inspiration: Burlap Chic

shabby chic wedding inspiration

To say that I’ve got a thing for all things Shabby Chic would be a serious understatement. In fact I’d go as far as to say I’m full-fledged obsessed! But mine is not a one girl club. From home to wedding day decor, Shabby Chic happens to be one of the most popular design approaches around. Defined by floral patterns, soft hues and distressed finishes, by its very nature Shabby Chic puts an effortless twist on the formalities of Vintage and a sophisticated spin on the casual carefree ways of Homespun. Right in the middle is where you find Shabby Chic, with its abundant layers, sheer feminine textiles and pink that goes for miles. Could anything be better to frame your wedding day celebration? I think not!

So without any further delay, let’s explore all the design elements that come together to create a stunningly Shabby Chic event, including our very own design twist tips on how to make the look uniquely yours.

The Look – Effortless Beauty

Shabby Chic is about the appearance of a balance between the tossed at whim and the perfectly placed. From the hair, to the shoes, to all the things that come in between, the key is to make it all appear effortlessly natural even though it takes meticulous planning to get the look right. The end result, well worth the effort, is drop dead gorgeous.

The Design – Distressed and Layered

If it’s not rich in layered fabrics or defined by distressed finishes, it need not apply! And what’s the easiest way to bring in dimension and complexity to your set up? Props. Think outside the must have pieces that serve a tangible function and incorporate items that are purely decorative. And although traditional textiles, like linens and lace, will always have a place in a Shabby Chic design, don’t be afraid to mix in your own fabric of choice, like we did with burlap.

The Colors

There’s no mistaking that the Shabby Chic design has its own distinctive color palette. But how you incorporate and blend the pinks and blues that inherently make up this theme’s color story, even what exact shades you select,  is up for interpretation. Make them mere accents to a dominant white palette, allow them to overtake your design as a whole, or mix with an unexpected shade like pewter grey. Get inspired by your selected venue’s existing look and feel and go from there.

DIY Wedding Wednesday: The Power of Color {and Chalk Paint}

diy birdcage favors

Shabby Chic, Vintage and Rustic all share one major thing in common. All are super hot right now as far as wedding trends go. And it’s no wonder why. Each comes with countless gorgeous ways to personalize and style an event. If you’re one of the many brides looking for your own unique version of one of these themes then it’s time to get comfy with the concept of DIY and brush up on some of the tricks of the trade. And boy do I have an amazing trick to share with you today! It’s a little thing {literally, you can get it in 4 fl. ounce jars} called chalk paint and it takes anything that might not have the right look because of color or texture and transforms it to theme appropriate weathered perfection. Just take a look at what it did for a mini birdcage favor. It certainly had me saying “eek!”

The Supplies

diy birdcage favor supplies

  • mini birdcage
  • choice of chalk paint color(s) and paint brush {we used annie sloan chalk paint in louis blue, pure white and antoinette}
  • floral foam
  • mini personalized streamer
  • satin ribbon, coordinated to the birdcage color(s)
  • choice of flowers (i used hydrangea, peonies and baby’s breath)

The How-To

diy distressed white birdcage favor white chalk painted mini birdcage

Step 1: paint your birdcage. If using chalk paint you’ll need two coats. Don’t worry about a bit of the original black still coming through. An imperfect look is what you want.

{stylist tip: if you can’t find chalk paint, use spray paint instead. It’ll provide for a similar look, just a slightly different finish.}

Step 2: for an added personal touch, hole punch a personalized streamer and tie to top of the birdcage with ribbon.

blue and green hydrangea

Step 3: cut floral foam into a piece small enough to fit into the birdcage and insert floral stems. Insert florals from various angles, aiming for a full but loose finish. Think overflowing.

Step 4: repeat steps 1 – 3 on as many birdcages as you need. For the Shabby Chic look, as featured in this tutorial, mix up your paint colors, sticking to pale pastels, and your floral stems. For a Vintage or Rustic look stick to one color palette.

stylist tip: for a simple and more budget friendly version, don’t be afraid to leave the birdcages empty. they are just as lovely all on their own.

DIY Wedding Wednesday: Fabric Flower Chair Backs

diy fabric flower chair back

I’m a complete and total sucker for a wedding that includes special unexpected little extras throughout its design. I’m talking about those that go above and beyond the must have staples, like flowers or candles, and include DIY details that personalize and elevate the entire look of the event. So when fabric ribbons and flowers were added to the Weddingstar line up my mind immediately starting thinking about all the amazing decorative possibilities. Today I’m sharing one of my faves, the fabric flower chair back. Whether used as ceremony aisle markers, bride and groom chair backs or overall chair decor, this pretty extra is a must have as far as I’m concerned! And as an added bonus, it can be repurposed in other decorative ways. Get ready to fall in love!

The Supplies

diy fabric flower chair back supplies

The Step by Step

diy fabric flower chair back - steps 1 to 5

Step 1: with the chair’s back facing you, hang the ribbon over the top center point of your chair, creating a loop. Don’t worry about keeping either side of your hanging strands even in length. Keeping them at slightly different lengths provides for a prettier end result.

Steps 2&3: loop the right strand under and over.

Step 4: do the same to the left strand.

Step 5: pull both strands to tighten. This step will also pull your loop over such that it’s facing you, as shown in image 5.

diy fabric flower chair back - steps 6 to 8

Steps 6 and 7: repeat steps 1-5 on your second strand of ribbon to achieve the result shown in image 7.

Step 8: tie on a strand of lace for added texture.

diy fabric flower chair back - steps 9 and 10

Step 9:  glue your medium flower to the right side of your ribbon formation.

Step 10: glue your small flower to the left side of your ribbon formation, slightly lower than your medium flower.

Something New

If applied correctly the chair back can be removed from the chair in such a way that the flowers stay attached, allowing you to use this pretty decorative creation for plenty of other wedding day accents, like part of a custom backdrop or as table trim.
