The WS Stylist Series: The Best of Bridal Hair

stylist series

Today we’re talking hair. Great hair. Scratch that, amazing hair. But before we get there, a bit of background notes for you as an intro to our latest Blog series.

In this year’s “new look” issue of Weddingstar magazine you will find loads of inspiration for the most trending wedding designs, along with direct access to the products that will get you the look. What you won’t find however are the details behind the bridal styles featured on the “brides” and “grooms” that graced the pages. Considering how swoon worthy the looks pulled together by our beauty and style contributors are, we figured it only fair to arm you with all you need to know to make the looks yours. And so was born the idea for this series. We’re calling it the Weddingstar Stylist Series and we’re running it every Friday for the next four weeks.

Which brings us back to the beginning, starting with hair, amazing hair, with styling tips for our favorite looks of 2014, direct from the person responsible, the insanely talented Sylvie Prud’Homme of The Loft Toronto.

Vintage

Behind the Look: “When I started planning the “Vintage” look for Weddingstar, I decided I wanted to channel something other than the Old Hollywood Waves from the 1940’s. I thought we’d bring it back with less movie star flare and more royal grace. Sweeping the hair up and off the face and neck, we gave the shoulders and clavicle some serious presence. The end result, pure elegance, with a touch of sexy.”

To Get This Look: “When speaking to your stylist,  request a low bun or chignon, and ask her/him to incorporate volume into the crown and around your face. The full chignon must be balanced to achieve that “antique” look. I always have Kerastase Couture Styling V.I.P. (Volume in Powder) on hand when working with any upstyle that requires lift, movement and hold.”

Wanderlust

Behind the Look: “We all know that a Wanderlust bride is not concerned about a big “to-do” wedding, so why would she have a fussy bridal hairdo?  Our globe-trotter wants easy-peasy. But just because she wants something simple doesn’t mean it can’t be special. Soft, flirty curls are the perfect way to accentuate a girly, carefree gown. A centre part for loose curls adds a sense of the bohemian and a certain playfulness.”

To Get This Look: “Be sure to remind your hairstylist that this is in fact your wedding day. Even though you may be walking down the aisle with a less traditional hairstyle, you want to ensure that it’s executed flawlessly. Shine and hold are key. Finishing this look with Kerastase Gloss Appeal will add brilliance and reliability.”

Woodland

Behind the Look: “Who doesn’t love an outdoor wedding? The birds are singing, the leaves are rustling, and the sun is warming your face as you walk down the moss bedded aisle.  When planning your alfresco wedding, remember that your beauty look needs to follow the same path. Just like the forest, your hair needs to tell a tale of textures.”

To Get This Look: “With braids and large buns being such a common request with brides, a modern take can set you apart from the rest. I added some texture by using a crimping technique around the frame of the face, avoiding a smooth surface. Crimping may seem a little dated, but subtly used it can actually work to add multiple layers of interest to the hair. I always finish my bridal looks with a finishing spray to ensure that there is still movement but that the upstyle will last as long as my bride needs it to. I suggest Kerastase Lacqure Noire, which is a strong hold spray with added shine, allowing a bride to remain in her spotlight.”

Rustic Chic

Behind the Look: “How would I relive my wedding day? In a barn, a bourbon cocktail in hand, feeling like a rustic Cinderella, pre-Prince Charming, marrying the shy farm hand instead. Not that I’ve given it much thought! To me, curls were a given for our Rustic Burlap Chic look. I wanted to evoke the 1920’s farm girl. She had to have tightly wound hair that would blow in the wind as a gust went by. She had to be delicate and youthful. Untroubled, but aware.”

To Get This Look: “If your hair is naturally textured, have your stylist smooth out your roots to create a fresher style and diffuse your natural locks by applying a curl enhancing product to your length and ends. I recommend Kerastase Curl Fever, which launches in November 2014. If your stands are naturally straight, good news is you’re a blank canvas. Ask your stylist to work from scratch to recreate this look.”

Wedding Design 101: Mastering the Wedding Tablescape

tablescape inspiration

We’re a week away from Canada’s first official long weekend so naturally I’ve got parties top of mind. My favorite kind? A proper dinner party complete with great food, even better wine, and loads of fantastic friends. Having planned a few in my day I know that one of the cardinal rules to a great bash, and incidentally a great wedding, is a well set and styled table. Dining tables are where your guests spend most of their time, and in the case of a wedding where table settings are in the double digits, the visual becomes all that much more important. So today I’m breaking down the five basic essentials behind a successful tablescape. And considering practice makes perfect, you’ve got an excuse to plan a few parties to test out your own skills before your big day. Bon fete!

The Essentials – #1: Show Them to Their Seat

Rule number one to being a pro hostess: manage the guest experience from start to finish. Make it carefree and effortless for them, right down to where they’re meant to sit. Marking their spot with a theme appropriate place marker not only gets the job done, it also works as an added decorative touch. To get them to their table, use a seating chart or escort cards, greeting your guests upon arrival and guiding them to where they need to go.

The Essentials – #2: Greet Them with a Treat

Make your guests feel special and incorporate some instant eye candy into your design with a little surprise gift waiting to greet your guests as they settle in. Repeated over every place setting it makes for the perfect finishing touch and a fantastic first impression.

The Essentials #3: Layers of Goodness

From chargers to trimmed napkins, designing your place settings using multiple layers adds dimension and interest to your tablescape. Complete the look with a dried or fresh flower in your color scheme for an unexpected touch of pretty.

The Essentials – #4: Keeping Focus

With all the things going on with a tablescape, it’s important to have a focal point that pulls it all together. Given its central positioning on a table, a beautiful floral centerpiece is a natural choice. Use height or eye catching decorative accents to create the focus. Where budget allows, expand on the concept by creating a table length runner made of bountiful floral arrangements.

The Essentials – #5: The Finer things

For a really impressive design consider setting aside some budget for lovely little unexpected details. Upgraded flatware, delicate chair backs or custom table overhangs are all surefire ways of pulling together an unforgettable and unique event design.
