DIY Wedding Wednesday: The Dessert Bar How-to

wedding dessert bar how-to

Wedding planning can often feel like a long list of overwhelming, time consuming “to dos”. Between the site visits searching for a venue, the budget management that has to go on throughout, and the writing out of place card after place card, it’s easy to forget to have fun. So today we’re recommending putting down your pen, your folders and your phone, and insisting you take a well deserved break to consider the incorporation of one of the most popular wedding day setups, the candy or dessert bar. Guaranteed to please every guest in attendance, and an ultra fun addition to plan, the dessert bar concept is never a bad idea. And let’s not forget all the yummy taste testing you’ll have to do in the process! To help get you started, here’s our how-to breakdown, complete with budget friendly, on trend display details sure to come together as a statement reception set up.

Pick Your Color Palette Before Your Flavor Palette

First things first, decide on the colors you’d like to incorporate into your table set up. Your selection should be a play on your overall wedding color scheme and can be incorporated through tags, ribbons, tabletop props (think a few pretty balloons), and if possible, your selected treats. For a simpler, cleaner look, stick to white desserts and candies and play up your colors through your accessories.

Pick Your Go-To Treats

Variety is key when it comes to dessert bars. That said, you also want to make sure you keep your costs down. For that reason start the dessert selection process with your go-to treats, which should be easy to source, budget friendly options that you can buy in bulk. Make these items a focal point in your display by showcasing them in some pretty and trendy apothecary jars.

Skip the Statement Cake

Continuing on the cost effective path, consider leaving out the big statement piece cake and opt instead for a mini version, a perfect fit for the two of you, the new Mr. and Mrs. Play up the display by incorporating a couple specialty items like custom bride and groom cake forks and a unique cake topper.

Make it Favor Friendly

Beyond the sweets your guests will instantly enjoy, fill out your display by incorporating your guest favors.  Not only will the mini gifts make for some pretty eye candy, they also nicely fill out the available space without the need to spend further budget.

DIY Wedding Wednesday: How-To Capture the Candids

wedding how to - capturing the candids

There’s absolutely nothing that compares to wedding photos taken by a professional photographer. Someone experienced in telling a couple’s love story through creative images taken on one of the most important days of their lives. But chances are your photographer will spend no more than 10 hours with you (12 if you’re lucky), leaving you with some missed moments certainly worth capturing. Not to worry though, we’ve got just the solution for filling in the gap, all while getting your guests involved in some fun. It’s as simple as putting a disposable, and budget friendly, single use camera into the hands of your guests.  Allow them to play photog for a moment, to see what great candid moments they can capture. Here’s the simple breakdown of everything you need to pull off the concept.

The Set-Up

Fancy requirements need not apply. Simply set up a small station, whether it be part of another set up like your welcome table or its own stand, and include however many cameras you’d like, as well as a sign explaining the candid moment mission to your guests. Go with a camera design that fits your wedding theme (see all the styles Weddingstar has to offer here), or a neutral and super cute option like the vintage design option shown here.

After the Big Day – Safekeeping

Once you’ve had a chance to develop all the great memories your guests captured, consider storing them in a lovely keepsake box, ready for exploring whenever the mood strikes.

DIY Wedding Wednesday: How To Personalize Your Ceremony

sand ceremony how to

I’ve never been one to do tradition for tradition’s sake. But when it comes to weddings certain rituals are worth exploring and honoring, especially when personalized with a sentimental twist. Which is precisely what today’s how-to feature, the sand ceremony, does for the unity ceremony concept. From as simple as a custom sand color selection, to a modernized vessel that acts as a perfect keepsake long after the big “I dos”, there’s a reason sand ceremonies continue to reign in popularity with brides and grooms across the globe. Here’s our top three favorite ways to incorporate the love ritual into your day.

#1 – A Sentimental Spin

Want something ultra unique? Go for a contemporary design that doubles as a keepsake. Opt for the framed version of this chic acrylic shadow box, to display a couple of your favorite wedding day pictures, or select the clear acrylic version to fill with something special from your big day, like the preserved petals from your bridal bouquet.

#2 – A Family Affair

For the couple whose love has grown beyond just two, go for a sand ceremony that allows you incorporate your little one, or ones. Their participation in the celebration of your unity will no doubt be cherished always.

#3 – Color Match

Just looking for something simple to mark the occasion? Then pick your color match, either something that goes with your wedding day design or a couple of shades that mean something special to the two of you, and run with a neutral vase set that can easily find a spot in your home for years to come.

diy summer bouquet - supplies

  • white peonies, pink lisianthus and blushing bride (we used 5, 3 and 2 stems respectively)
  • floral wire and tape
  • lace ribbon and bridal bins
  • floral shears

The Step by Step

summer bouquet how to - 1

Step 1: after organizing your stems and cleaning them off of excess leaves, begin building your bouquet from the center out. Start by bunching together 2 or 3 peonies and add a bountiful stem of lisianthus to the bottom of that bundle. If your single lisianthus stems aren’t full enough, double up.

Step 2: add 2 stems of blushing bride to the top of the arrangement.

Step 3: surround the blushing bride stems with another 2 peonies and finish off the bouquet with another 2 stems of lisianthus, added to either side of the arrangement. Again, if your single lisianthus stems aren’t as full as you want them to be, double up.

Step 4: firmly secure the bouquet with floral wire, starting just a couple of inches from the base of the flower heads and moving down approximately 2-3 inches.

Step 5: cover the floral wire with floral tape and trim down your stems to the desired bouquet length.

Step 6: cover the tape with lace ribbon, finishing it off in a loose bow tie.

Look #3: The Lovely En Masse Centerpiece – Supplies

diy summer centerpiece - supplies

The Step by Step

diy summer wedding centerpiece - how to

Step 1: decide how you’d you like your grouping of vessels to sit together on your table. Look to create a balance in heights and colors.

Step 2: begin adding stems to the back vessels first. The key is to not overdo the number of stems going into any one vessel. You want a light and airy look, which also happens to be more budget friendly.

Step 3: next fill in your front vessels, going with shorter stems so not to completely cover the pretty vessels in the back.

The How-To

diy garden wedding favor - step 1

Step 1: pull faux moss off its roll. Apply a layer of Mod Podge to the top of your box and a add an uneven application of moss to it. Make sure the layer of glue is thick enough to hold the moss, but not so think that it clumps and dries unevenly.

Step 2: using all purpose glue attach a butterfly to the top left corner of your box, on top of the moss.

Steps 3 & 4: again using Mod Podge, apply a layer of the adhesive  to the middle point of the left side of your box lid, as well as to the front right and right front corners. Add moss. The completed overall moss application should give off an “overgrown” look. Finish with a personalized tag.
