Sweet Signage: DIY Mini Paper Garland

diy mini paper garlands

I think it’s pretty much guaranteed that if you take any wedding day detail and scale it down to a miniature version of itself, you instantly get super sweet results. And that’s exactly what happened when we took inspiration from all the great wedding banners out there, including those in the Weddingstar lineup, and created a DIY mini paper garland cake topper for an editorial in the latest issue of Weddingstar magazine. As soon as the charm of the handcrafted came together with all things tiny, we knew we had created something special. For all of you that would agree, here’s the step by step on how to recreate the look, including a couple alternate versions, because we just couldn’t resist the opportunity to make more!

Look #1 – Pattern Fun

The Supplies

  •  mini kraft paper pennant garland
  • craft paper with pattern designs of your  choice. We used two different patterns and alternated them.
  • fabric ribbon (available at most craft specialty stores)
  • mini letter stamp (to create a monogram)  and blue ink pad
  • skewers
  • scissors and glue gun

The Step by Step

Step 1: cut two separate pieces of garland, 6 pennants in length each, or more if you’d like a longer banner.

Step 2: cut a piece of fabric ribbon into the pennant shape shown above and stamp on your monogram.

Step 3: cut your craft paper pennants, just slightly smaller in size than the pennants on the banner. The banner has three different sized pennants and we covered the two largest ones with a dedicated pattern each, leaving the smallest as is.

Step 4: glue your craft paper pennants onto your banner, alternating your pattern as cut, then connect each separate banner strand to either side of the fabric ribbon pennant. Let dry.

Step 5: when completely dry, attach the completed banner to the skewers.

To get this look first decide on the length of your banner, then attach a globe charm to only the largest pennants and finish off the ends of the banner by gluing on satin ribbon garlands. To create the ribbon garlands simply cut a few strands of ribbon in both colors, then cut those in half for a thin and delicate finish, create two bunches and tie at the top to hold together.
