DIY: Chalkboard Signs Part 2

1blog_styled_chalk1

A few weeks ago we shared a DIY Chalkboard post by our Ambassador Lorrie Everitt from Creative Bag. Today we are continuing on the chalkboard topic with these large, decorative chalkboard chair signs. DIY projects like these chair signs are a great way to add a personal touch to your wedding decor. Use this step-by-step guide and template to create your very own chalkboard chair signs.

In addition we will also show you how to create paper flowers used to embellish the chair signs, to create your own DIY boho styled decor.

The Supplies:

Large Decorative Chalkboard With White Frame
• Liquid Chalk Markers
• White transfer paper
• Pencil
• Painter’s Tape
• Scissors
• Print out with design/ text
Ribbon
• Tools to Punch Holes Into Chalkboard
• Water Mister
• Glue
Optional – Gold Craft Paint or Gold Paint Pen to decorate your flowers

blog_chalkboard2

The Step by Step

Step 1:

Print and cut out the lettering for the signs. Position the lettering on the chalkboard so there will be space to add the paper flowers later. Use painter’s tape to hold the paper in place.

Step 2:

Place the white transfer paper with the chalky side down towards the chalkboard, as shown above, under the paper template. Use a pencil to trace the lettering onto the chalkboard.

blog_chalkboard3

Step 3:

Your traced lettering will be very faint but you should be able to see the complete design before you remove the paper template.

blog_chalkboard4

Step 4:

Using your traced image as a guide, fill in the lettering with a chalk marker. Once the chalk ink has dried you can easily remove any remaining tracing lines with a soft dry cloth.

blog_chalkboard5

Step 5:

At this point you will want to add a couple of holes to the top of your chalkboard for hanging later. I used a craft punch that is suitable for wood and metal products.

Option: If you would like to add a gold touch to your chalkboard, like I did on the chair signs for the boho wedding, you can do that using gold craft paint or gold paint pens.

blog_chalkboard6

Step 6:

Print the paper flowers template on the paper of your choice. Cut the flowers shapes out as shown above.

blog_chalkboard7

Step 7:

To make the paper easier to work with, lightly mist each flower.

blog_chalkboard8

Step 8:

The swirly flower shape will make a 3D floral shape. Start with the small outer end and begin to roll the paper as shown above. Continue to roll it until you almost reach the end. The wide inner edge will become the base of the flower. Allow the paper flower to dry.

blog_chalkboard13

Step 9:

Once dry, glue the bottom of the rolled flower to the wide base so it will stay in place and lay flat. You don’t want the other floral shapes to be flat so while they are still a little wet, scrunch them up with you hand.

blog_chalkboard9

Step 10:

After the floral pieces have dried completely you can glue them together however you would like. This will allow you to form larger, fuller flowers.

blog_chalkboard10

Step 11:

I painted gold glitter paint on the edges of the petals of these white paper flowers for a different look.

blog_chalkboard11

Step 12:

Glue the paper flowers to the top of the chalkboard just above your beautiful hand lettering.

blog_chalkboard12

Step 13:

And finally, add a ribbon for hanging.

DIY Wedding Wednesday: Well Lit – The Illuminated Table Runner

how to - the illuminated table runner

It’s no secret that I’m slightly obsessed with table runners. Whether they be made up of candles, florals, foliage, or all of the above, I can’t get enough of them. And there’s one very good reason. They are stunning! Gracing the center of a tabletop, they provide a visual focal point that binds the reception event design together. The creative opportunities for execution are endless, and you can’t go wrong with any single approach. And just when I thought they couldn’t get any prettier, we decided to try adding some string lights into the equation. The result, instant gorgeousness. Here’s how to make the look yours.

The Step by Step and The Supplies

table runner how to

Step 1: Select an abundant green (or two) to act as the base of your runner. We used two varieties of eucalyptus, seeded and moon lagoon. Going with more than one variety of greenery provides for added texture and interest. And remember, the fuller your selected green(s), the less stems you’ll need to complete the look. We used two bunches of the seeded eucalyptus, and one of the moon lagoon.

Step 2: Starting at one end of your table, lay a wide and full gathering of your main foliage. This will be your widest point.

Step 3: Working toward the middle point of the table, start tapering in your gathering. You don’t want it to be too narrow but a slightly tapered approach creates an interesting effect and saves on the amount of stems you need.

Step 4: If using two varieties of greenery, add in select stems of the second kind for added texture, reserving some to later cover exposed wiring from your string lights (which will be added when the runner of greens is complete).

Step 5: Repeat steps 1-4 on the other side of the table, meeting the two arrangements at the middle point.

Step 6: Take your selected string lights, we went with white paper and white lace lanterns (one strand of each), and intertwine them into your greenery. Use the stems to cover as much of the wiring as possible, incorporating additional stems if necessary.

DIY Wedding Wednesday: Wedding Stationery 101 – The Series

wedding stationery 101

Pocket folds, backers and embellishments. Labels, menus, hand fans and tote bags. And that’s just to name a few! Stationery options are a plenty and they go far beyond the must-have invite / rsvp duo. With all the possibilities available to today’s brides, it’s no surprise so many get stumped when first sitting down to decide what’s right for them. To help lighten the load and make sense of it all, we’re starting up a new stationery series, which will run throughout the month of January on every DIY Wedding Wednesday. We’re breaking down the options, the possibilities and offering up some guidance on what’s right for who. And for our first series post we’re taking it back to basics, walking you through the how-to for low, medium and high concept stationery suites.

Concept #1: Simplified.

Keep it simple, ultra budget friendly, and still lovely by going with a flat printed design that perfectly fits your overall wedding design. No additional details necessary. Weddingstar carries a wide range of options, in a variety of thematic designs, all sold complete with envelopes. Shop all the options here.

Concept #2: Take it Up a Notch

If you’re having a semi-formal affair, consider upping the formality and presentation of your standard wedding invitation and rsvp with the addition of backer cards. Adding color, dimension and texture to your core suite, easy to incorporate backer cards instantly bring the overall look of a stationery design up a level. For an added finishing touch, tie your pieces together with a color coordinated satin ribbon.

Concept #3: The Whole Package

If you’re going for an upgraded invitation suite,  you’ll want to consider completing the look with upgraded envelopes. For ultra formal events inner pocket fold envelopes are recommended. Inner envelopes hold your invitation and rsvp card, complete with return envelope, providing for a formal presentation of the entire suite. For your outer envelope, which will hold your completed pocket fold, consider going with an upgraded stock quality in a pearl finish option that will nicely compliment the rest of your pieces.

2015 Wedding Trend Predictions

2015 wedding trend predictions

To say that I’m excited about today’s post would be an understatement. I am elated! Not only do I get to share some early insights into what’s trending for 2015 weddings, something I know brides everywhere are after, I also get to release the first exclusive sneak peek into the visual content from the upcoming issue of Weddingstar magazine. And that content is oh so very lovely! I get to share these two topics together because it’s with trending wedding design insight that the magazine was pulled together. Brimming at the binding with inspirational imagery and ideas, with something for every couple and wedding theme covered, this soon to be released issue is bound to be the go-to resource for 2015 weddings. So without further delay, let’s bring on the pretty!

2015 Trend #1. The Bohemian Takeover

boho wedding theme boho wedding tablescape

It’s not a coincidence this one is at the top of our list. From authentic ethereal design concepts to luxe interpretations, brides everywhere are going after the Boho look. It’s a trend that we saw make a big mark in 2014 and it’s certain to takeover as the top trend for 2015. What you’ll find in the pages of the magazine is a design that blends the traditional with the luxurious, introducing a level of grandeur and a touch of elegance. You’ll see the best of the Boho concepts mixed with a slight sense of the formality that every wedding deserves.

2015 Trend #2. Introducing Industrial Chic

industrial chic wedding theme industrial chic wedding tablescape

2015 is trending to see a shift to the informal as far as overall wedding designs go. Like one big dinner party, family seating, inviting earthy tones and sophisticated designs will rule. And it’s this issue’s Industrial Chic feature that embodies the concept to a T. Textured and sleek, mature and modern, this feature will be a hit with any bride looking for a big city wedding without all the fuss. But with its casual but polished details, its appeal will span across weddings as a whole.

2015 Trend #3. Romance in Color

2015 wedding color predictions wedding colors - pale blue 2015 wedding colors - dusty purple and peach 2015 wedding colors - smokey grey

From dusty purples, pale blues and soft greens to pastel peaches and pinks, 2015 wedding colors will revive the deeply rooted notions of the romantic, the whimsical, and the feminine. Soft palettes and delicate design details will come together to create breathtakingly beautiful events. Smokey grey will also make regular appearances as both a main and an accent color.

2015 Trend #4. The Reign of Rustic

rustic florals

A continually strong wedding theme, Rustic will maintain a presence on the 2015 wedding scene. But beyond traditional theme and design interpretations, Rustic accents will also make appearances in unconventional places. Pair Rustic arrangements with a Classic tablescape, like what you’ll find was created for the upcoming issue’s Classic feature, for a touch of ease to an otherwise formal display.

2015 Trend #6. Oh The Details

2015 wedding trends - details

2015 weddings may be seeing a shift to the informal, but that certainly doesn’t mean designs will be thrown together at whim. Quite the opposite. DIY Wedding Wednesday: Bits of Boho – Painted Place Card Holders

diy painted place card holders

It never ceases to amaze me how far a little paint can go in the transformation of whatever it’s applied to. With the infusion of a bit of strategically selected color, and with some creative application, countless design specific details are possible. Today we’re using it and some stencils to apply a touch of the hottest trending wedding theme, Boho, to some organically appropriate place cards holders. From turquoise feathers to blush pink arrows, rocks never looked so good! Here’s how to add bits of the Boho design to your wedding day.

The Supplies

diy painted rock place card holder supplies

  • autumn leaf design place cards
  • multi surface acrylic paint in choice colors – we used the Craft Smart brand in Blush Pink, Native Turquoise and Deep Peach
  • paintbrushes – one small flat headed brush for use with stencils and one fine tip for freehand application
  • a selection of stencills featuring staple Boho graphics

The How-To

diy boho place card holder - feathers

  • select your stencils. Stick on stencils are best for this project, allowing for the most precise painted details.
  • use a mix of Boho inspired graphics and a varied complimentary color palette
  • using a flat headed paintbrush apply a coat of multi surface paint onto each rock. Don’t worry about a perfectly even application. An uneven finish makes for a more organic overall look.
