Wedding Planning Essentials: The Dos and Don’ts of Wedding Day Decor

wedding decor tips

If you’re like me you can’t do a thing without a list. From groceries to weekend plans, if it ain’t on paper, it ain’t happening! The need for a list only becomes that much more of a necessity when things get complicated. And I can think of few more complicated personal projects than the planning of a wedding day design. With endless options, never ending inspiration (thanks Pinterest!), and countless details to work through, it’s downright daunting. So to start the weekend off on a positive note, today I’m sharing my list of top dos and don’ts, listed in no particular order, to getting fabulous day of decor. Happy Stress-Free Friday!

unique wedding venue

Do try to go for an unconventional venue for your ceremony and reception. Think outside the typical options and go for something that best reflects your personal taste and style.

Don’t take on a blank slate unless you’re prepared to do a lot of work, and consider hiring on a professional wedding planner to help you manage the logistics.

Do have fun with color. Explore bold options and play with a mix of shades.

Don’t go color crazy, mixing too many hues or ones that don’t complement one another. Not sure what works? Use the trusty color wheel!

Do play with heights on your tablesapes. A mix adds tremendous dimension to an event’s design.

Don’t forget to consider line of sight, making sure placement of all centerpieces allows for proper guest interaction.

Do get down into the details. The more intricate your day of design, the better. Think layer upon layer.

Don’t give those details a second thought on your wedding day. Turn to your wedding planner, if you have one, or hire a day of coordinator to execute all you’ve planned.

Do set up decorative vignettes, complete with props, to elevate your overall design to the next level.

Don’t go so prop heavy that your event no longer feels like a wedding.

luxury seating

Do consider event upgrades to customize your wedding design. Think luxury chairs, premium linens and elegant charger plates.

Don’t break the bank in the process. Take on only as much as you can afford.

Do use chandeliers whenever you can. They add a level of elegance to any design.

Don’t forget they require special logistical requirements, i.e. hanging mechanisms.

diy birdcage favor

Do DIY some of your wedding day details, to personalize your event like only you can.

Don’t try to tackle everything and leave the major elements, like food and florals, to the pros.

Do incorporate candlelight whenever possible. No other design element does more to add ambiance to an event.

Don’t forget to make sure your venue will allow it. Some don’t, while others have restrictions about keeping candlelight contained.

creative table runner

Do be daring and get creative. Mix up traditional design concepts with new and unexpected details.

Don’t get hung up on conventional approaches or stuck on what’s been done with your selected venue in the past.

The Big Picture

The WS Stylist Series – Part 3: Grooms Get Styled

stylist series - grooms get styled

Alright grooms, this one’s just for you! With the next installment in our WS Stylist Series, see the first two features here and here, we figured it’s high time we focus on the man of the hour. Because as important as a bride is on her wedding day, let’s face it, she would be nowhere without her best accessory, her groom. To ensure you look nothing but stylish and sharp while in the spotlight with your bride, we’ve got the top tips for selecting your tailored wedding look straight from the subject matter experts, the stylists at Toronto’s leading menswear store, Gotstyle.

Top 9 Tips for Selecting Your Wedding Suit

1. Don’t Rent. Buy. In order to look your best on the big day, shopping off the rack or made-to-measure suiting is the best way to go. Rented suits are cut for the overall fit of every body type. Sleeves are often too long, waistbands are synched with buckles and sloppy pant hems are pretty much a given. Invest in a suit of your own for your big day that’ll also keep as a long term addition to your wardrobe.

groom styling tips - 1

2. The Perfect Fit. The most important thing to think about when buying a suit for your wedding is fit. Just because it is trimmed with lapels you like or is graced with a ticket pocket doesn’t mean it’s the right look for you. Every body is different. Purchasing a suit that fits your body type is the key to keeping you comfortable and feeling good on your big day.

groom styling tips - 2

3. Let Your Personality Shine. Your wedding is a day you want to present the best version of who you are. Really like the look of a double-breasted suit but haven’t had the opportunity to wear one? Feel more comfortable in trousers and a blazer? Now’s the time to show your personal style. Your wedding attire should be an extension of who you are when you’re at your very best.

groom styling tips - 3

4. Color Conscious. Classic charcoal, crisp navy and breathtaking black are all wonderful options for a wedding suit that can easily work back into your daily wardrobe, but don’t be afraid to go with something bold. Your wedding is a wonderful opportunity to be adventurous. Try a non-traditional color choice such as light grey, burgundy or even electric blue to really get the attention of your family and friends.

5. The Tricks of Tailoring. Once you’ve selected a suit that matches your personality and fits your frame, the final step to perfect fit is alterations. All true gentlemen work with a tailor to tweak any minor adjustment that may be needed to an off the rack suit. Alterations are necessary to perfecting your wedding wear.

6. Detailed Decorations. Accessories are a wonderful way to incorporate your personality or even your wedding theme into your look. Tie bars or rings, lapel pins and suspenders are standout additions, while colored socks or shoelaces have become a wedding staple. For something really special, play with your look throughout the day. Go with a traditional tie during the ceremony and then switch it out for something fun like a patterned bow tie for the reception.

groom styling tips - 4

7. Pattern Play. A wedding is arguably the most festive of occasions and always an opportunity to celebrate. Wearing a printed tie, a shirt with a pattern, or even a whimsical pocket square are simple adjustments that will take your suit from business to pleasure. The more fashion forward groom can go as bold as to wear a printed suit in a windowpane or glen check fabric.

8. Conform to the Code. A simple way to alleviate wedding day wardrobe stress is to dress to the code suggested for your guests. If you’re having a casual summer wedding consider wearing a blazer and trousers or a linen suit without a tie. A cocktail dress code pairs perfectly with a shawl collar jacket and tuxedo pant. By following the dress code you eliminate other wardrobe options that can make selecting a wedding outfit complicated.

groom styling tips - 5

9. Master of the Mismatch. The final and perhaps least obvious tip is this, the bride does not wear the same dress as the bridesmaids, nor should the groom have to wear the same look as the groomsmen. Differentiating yourself from your groomsmen can be as simple as choosing a different colored tie or adding a vest, to something as unique as wearing a light blue suit while your groomsmen sport navy. It’s your day. Don’t be shy to stand out and enjoy!

The WS Stylist Series – Part 2: Makeup Must Dos

stylist series - makeup must dos

Last week we introduced you to our latest Blog feature, The Stylist Series, which set out to give you everything you need to know about the bridal looks featured in the current issue of Weddingstar magazine. We started from the top, literally, with pro tips for seriously gorgeous bridal hair. Today we’re rounding out the beauty breakdown with makeup must dos, the essential tips for recreating the loveliest of bridal looks, ranging from the natural to the dramatic. And they’re coming to you straight from the woman who created them, the talented Toronto based makeup artist Heather Snowie.

Naturally On Trend

high fashion beauty look

Who It’s For: “This one is for the bride looking to blend the carefree look of the great outdoors with a touch of high fashion, straight off the runway.”

To Get This Look: “Consider pastels and neutrals as your go-to shades. Start by bringing a bit of color to the eyes. Here I used a very pale blue on the lids and paired it up with some gorgeous cognac browns of varying intensities in the outer corners and creases. They play off each other beautifully and would work especially well on a brown eyed girl. A neutral pink or peach toned lip makes for the perfect match.  I recommend using a long wearing pencil, like Makeup Forever’s Aqua Lip liners, with lipstick and/or gloss to help keep the look longer.”

Classic Daredevil

classic beauty look

Who It’s For: “For the bride who wants a classic beauty look but won’t hear of playing it safe.”

To Get This Look: “The classic look demands a clean sophisticated eye, sculpted cheeks and a pouting lip. To up the ante and interest, smokey eyes are a must and blending is key. Start by selecting a palette of colors, in 2-3 different shadow shades. I used pink and plum tones. Begin with the medium tone on the lid of the eye, from lash line to crease, corner to corner. Use the darkest shade in the outer corner and crease of the eye. Lastly use the lightest shade on the brow highlight to lift and open up the eyes.”

True Romantic

romantic bridal look

Who It’s For: “For any bride who just wants to feel pretty. This one is possibly one of my favorite bridal looks. It’s soft where it needs to be and pops when necessary.”

To Get This Look: “Start by understanding what colors work best for you. Maybe it’s an antique gold tone shadow blended with rich browns, or a pearled pink with a cool taupe. Whatever the shades, the goal is to enhance your eyes and make them shine. Give your lips a subtle pop with a berry or coral toned lipstick like MAC’s Fanfare. And finish off the look by giving your upper cheekbones a soft glowy highlight. I recommend using Benefit’s Moon Beam.”

Drama Queen

dramatic beauty look

Who It’s For: “Not for the faint of heart! This striking look, when perfectly executed, demands attention.”

To Get This Look: “The critical factor behind this look is to maintain balance. Yes you want drama, but you don’t want to look overdone. Start by picking a key feature and go bold with it! For our bride I went heavy on the eyes, contouring them with some dramatic greys. As I worked my way down I eased up on the intensity. The cheeks, above the contour of the cheekbones, got a blend of soft blush tones in pink and peach. The lips received just a touch of color. Another key factor, it’s all about matte finishes for this retro inspired beauty look. But be sure to avoid a dull and flat skin by finishing off with a light dusting of a mineral powder, like MAC’s Mineral Skin Finish.”

Reckless Abandonment

boho beauty look

Who It’s For: “If you consider yourself of the bohemian persuasion, this is your look.”

To Get This Look: “The bohemian inspired bride goes for a softer look of earthy colors, flawless but fresh dewy skin and a hint of color on the lips. For flawless, but not overdone skin, concealer is the star. By finding a great coverage concealer, like MAC’s Pro Longwear Concealer, you can use a sheer foundation that allows your skin to radiate. I would recommend applying the foundation first, using a dampened sponge.”

Wedding Reception Centerpieces: 9 Tips to Stunning Arrangements

acrylic candle holders

Big and small. Short and tall. Monochromatic and bursting with an abundance of color. Wedding reception centerpieces come in many sizes, shapes and colors, making them uber exciting as far as possibilities go, and ultra complicated as far as planning goes. To help you work your way through the endless array of options we’re breaking down everything you need to consider to make your final selection. Follow these tips and there’s no doubt your wedding reception will be a stunner!

The Centerpiece Guide

  1. Keeping Proportion. Make sure your centerpieces are big enough to fill out the tables they’re going to sit on. If too small, no matter how pretty, they’ll simply get lost.
  2. Provide for a Line of Sight. When going with tall arrangements try to ensure they don’t prevent anyone at the table from seeing other guests seated with them or any other important focal points, like your head table. You can do so by going with slender or clear vessels.
  3. Play with Height. One of the easiest ways to provide for visual impact is to play with varying heights within an arrangement. To get the look use various vessels or components to create a grouping.
  4. Go Beyond the Florals. Add interest to your arrangement by including additional elements like decorative props. Whether it be a wooden slab or a vintage drawer, props do wonders for the overall visual.
  5. Play with Color. Create instant drama by using bold colors or unconventional color combinations.
  6. Budget Considerations. If on a small budget consider going with faux flowers over fresh blooms. Create unique arrangements and the real deal won’t be missed.
  7. The Power of Candlelight. There’s is no better foolproof way to add beauty and romance to your centerpieces, and your wedding, than by using candles. The key factor to creating the look? There’s no such thing as too much candlelight!
  8. The Size Factor. Going big is not a must do. Long and low arrangements can be just as beautiful. Consider using varying low vessels for a grouping that creates a runner down a rectangular table or a full cluster on a round.
  9. A Touch of Bling. And when all else fails, add a touch of bling for guaranteed wow factor.

And now for some eye candy!
