DIY Wedding Decor: Beautiful Butterflies

whimsical garden wedding tablescape

I’m a lucky girl. My profession has me constantly immersed in beautiful things. Whether it’s helping a bride design her wedding or pulling together an editorial shoot, I’m always involved in creating pretty little details. I love all the creative challenges that come with my line of work. They keep me on my toes! But I get very excited when I come across a design detail that provides major visual impact while being easy to execute. Today’s DIY post is a perfect example of just that.

Following this past Monday’s Garden Whimsy Bridal Style Post, where butterflies made up one of the key design elements, today I’m showing you how to get the look through the simple incorporation of beautiful butterfly clusters. In Monday’s post you saw them featured as a head table overhang but they can be applied anywhere and on any scale. Because unfortunately our studio space is not set in the midst of a lovely summer garden, we’ve enlisted the help of one of our fave garden props, which just happens to be a perfect wedding prop too. Enjoy!

The Supplies

All you need are the butterflies. No tools required! The set I used was originally created for cake decorating purposes but the versatile design, complete with wire attachments, makes them usable for just about any decorative concept. Whether it be a ceremony backdrop, a head table overhang or a guest table centerpiece, these hand painted feather butterflies are sure to add a touch of pretty anywhere.

The Process

Step 1: Pick Your Point of Application

The two wire attachment points on these butterflies allow them to easily be inserted into or wrapped around any number of things.  I selected a wire mannequin which could be used as a creative decorative accent adjacent to a favor or greeting table, or as a prop for your wedding photos.

If your desired point of application does not offer up points of attachment, like a glass vase for example, simply remove the wires (which come out easily without damaging the product) and use Glue Dots to secure your butterflies.

Step 2: Get Yourself Organized

If you’re unsure of where to start and how to achieve the right final look, organize your butterflies before starting the application process. Separate them by size and color and then pre-form the clusters that will give you the end result you’re going for. And if getting creative comes easily to you, just skip this step and free form the application of your butterflies.

(Pro Tip: The best end result is one that looks effortless and natural.)

Step 3: Start Applying!

Pick your start and end points. To achieve that effortless look remember to mix up the colors and sizes, and the direction in which your butterflies are pointing.

Fill in your mid point. Make sure it keeps visual balance with your start and end points by using a similar mix of colors and sizes.

Work around your three reference points, building on the fullness of your overall cluster. Avoid overlapping your butterflies in such a way that their wings get flattened. You want them to look like they have just landed.Work to create a full final look but leave a little breathing room to avoid a messy end result.
